Warner Music Buys Spinnin’ Records – But what does that mean?
Written by EDM Authority on 19th September 2017
Any EDM fan will have heard of Spinnin’ Records, the global label many artists call home including KSHMR, EDX, Chocolate Puma, Sam Feldt, Alok, Umeet Ozcan and a whole load more.
But only last week Spinnin’ Records announced that they have been bought out by Warner Music in a $100M+ deal. But what does that mean for us Spinnin’ fans? We decided to do a little research into what this deal means for us, the listeners, the fans…
First off is who’s in charge. With such a big deal, what will happen to the powers behind the brand? The label will be operated by the Spinnin’ Records co-founder Roger de Graaf, while co-founder Eelko van Kooten is leaving the music business to pursue interests in other industries.
In a press release, Roger de Graaf, CEO & Co-Founder of Spinnin’ Records says:
“Spinnin’ has found the perfect home at Warner Music. Max, Stu, Bart, and the team really believe in our culture and commitment to artist development. They share our vision for growing Spinnin’ by creating even bigger opportunities for our artists and their music. It’s been an incredible journey so far and, as we look to the future, everyone at Spinnin’ Records would like to thank our close friend Eelko for everything he’s done for our company, artists, and industry. His partnership and leadership mean he will forever be part of the Spinnin’ family.”
Now we know that in recent years Spinnin’ has been at the forefront of several ‘scandals’ including sexist jokes on twitter, and if you haven’t heard about their dispute with Martin Garrix which lead to both parties planning to sue each other.
So now under the control of WMC we can expect some key changes to Spinnin’, and we’re really excited to see what the 2 parties will bring to the game in the future.
